How intermittent fasting can give you the focused edge you need

Some of the top entrepreneurs, business owners and creative thinkers attribute their success to being able to have laser-like focus.

The two biggest killers of this focus are being distracted and having little energy. In a world of notifications, social media and refined sugar its very easy to feel both of these EVERY. SINGLE. WORK. DAY. Switching off your phone or turning it to airplane mode is an easy fix for distraction. But how do we keep the mind thriving and energised?

Skipping breakfast or the scientific term – intermittent fasting.

How intermittent fasting gets you into laser-focus

Mark Mattson a neuroscientist, explains that from an evolutionary perspective fasting or being hungry would require the brain to become extra focused to be able to find and hunt food. Scientists have also discovered that when fasting the body produces ketones, these ketone bodies trigger the release of a molecule known as BDNF. This molecule tightens brain nerve cell connections improving memory and cognitive function.

Successful names such as Tim Ferris, Hugh Jackman, Beyonce and Sean Meyer all praise the mental clarity they get from intermittent fasting.

How you can introduce intermittent fasting to your routine

Start slowly, choose 3 days per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). Begin with breaking your fast 14 hours after your last meal. Make sure you sip on plenty of water and if you are a coffee drinker keep it to black. Once you are comfortable with 14 hours, push your fasts to 16 hours. The beauty of intermittent fasting is it can fit in with any eating preference, plant-based, paleo or gluten free all you are doing is shortening your eating window.

What a typical fasting day would look like?

Breakfast – Water, black coffee or Forme tea herbal infusions

Lunch (12pm) – Spinach and rocket salad with roasted pumpkin, walnuts and wild caught salmon

Snack (4pm) – Forme Raw Cacao Hot chocolate or punnet of berries

Dinner (7pm) – Zucchini noodles with pesto sauce

If you have any medical concerns please consult your medical professional before practicing any fasting.
